The initial call came in as an explosion, but Fairview Township Emergency Management Coordinator Brandon Freistat said there was never an explosion or even a fire. He said the incident was caused by a chemical that formed a vapor.

Freistat said the chemical was an acidic-based material that was 75% vinegar.

Three employees suffered burns, described as moderate to minor injuries.

Air smells like vinegar

Hours after the accident, people in the area were still reporting a strong smell of vinegar in the air.

Freistat said hazmat was on the scene, monitoring air quality and that there is no danger to the community. He said the chemical had been diluted and fans were being used to vent the building.
